Horse Training For Marin & Sonoma

The training of the horse requires a systematic approach combining the art and the science of developing a riding horse. My basis is anchored in French Classical Dressage with cavaletti (pole work) and gymnastics for the jumping horse. Lunging in side reins, work in hand, flat work such as the spiral exercise, dressage movements to work laterally as well as collection and extension all combine to make a very rideable and enjoyable horse.

To be a Horse Trainer you have to be a people trainer as well and it is a skill to bring the two together.

The training of a horse holistically is about exercise, discipline and unconditional love. It is a methodical approach based on reward and positive, positive, positive reinforcement of the association of the combination of leg, seat, hand, and voice meaning, “please do this”.

A program for a horse would look like this:

  • Turn out to run, buck, and play, or a lunging session as this excess energy is not helpful
  • Grooming and tacking
  • Then a well thought out plan on where the horse is, and where you would like to go.

A horse has a 20-minute attention span, so a 45-minute session has a 20-minute warm up, 20-minutes of training, and a 5-minute cool down. This provides consistency and the horse will work in relaxation in this program. Consistency is the key.

The training of a person is much the same formula. The tricky part is to teach a person how to feel. The weight in the hands, the pressure of the legs, the impulsion and carriage of the horse. The aids (Leg, Hand, Weight, Voice) need to be independent of each other, and yet coordinated in use to achieve the desired result. The learning of this takes years or as Beezie Madden’s husband said, “learning to ride is like digging a swimming pool with a spoon.” It is a lifetime of learning to be an equestrian.
